Possible foundational offering

The appearance of a small jar next to a wall of the salting factory speaks to us of a possible foundational offering of this industry.

The excavations carried out in 2002 to adapt this exhibition hall led to the finding of a possible factory foundational offering.

Next to the outside wall of a salting tank and deposited on the north wall’s foundation pit a small painted ceramic jar was found. It was found in a horizontal position with the opening next to the side of a tank. The opening was found protected and secured with an application of lime mortar which formed a bed to ensure the stability of the container. A stone in the bottom part of the jar performed the same function of stability.

The jar is a characteristic product of the Roman urban workshops in the south-east (possibly Ilici or Carthago Nova), but with a traditional indigenous decorative technique. Its style suggests it dates to between the 1st and 3rd centuries.

Inside the jar were found remains of organic components, which could lead us to believe it was an offering of food or fish related to a salting factory foundational ritual.
