The 15th Mediterranean Games were held in Almeria from the 24th June to the 3rd July, 2005 under the name: Almeria 2005. 21 Mediterranean countries took part in the Games and there were a total of 258 competitions in 25 different sports.
The Games mascot was “Indalete”, a doll in the shape of a multi-coloured Indalo (a prehistoric magical symbol), the emblem of the province of Almeria.
The municipal stadium was the most important sports infrastructure built for this great sporting event, situated in the Vega de Acá, next to the fair ground.
Among the installations were two 400 metre athletics tracks completely equipped for holding championships, two grass pitches, a covered warm-up area, an adjoining field for training and a covered stand with space initially for 15,000 spectators, which was enlarged with additional stands to hold up to 20,000 people.
It is a modern stadium whose pitch measures 105 by 68 metres and where the city´s most important football club plays its games: the Union Deportiva Almeria which uses the main pitch and the adjoining one with identical features. The Club has all the comforts for the red and white striped team and its fans.
Situated next to the installations of the Mediterranean Games Stadium is the Mediterranean Games Sports Hall. This municipal Hall has among its many installations an indoor sports track with a parquet surface, a synthetic sports track and two multipurpose halls. Sports such as basketball, handball, volleyball, table tennis, martial arts, athletics and indoor football can be played in its installations.
