The production of salting containers

Otras ubicaciones

The conserving industry contributed to the increase in certain complementary industries, as in the case of pottery, which supplied the containers (different types of amphora) necessary for the transport of the product to its destiny. In the Mazarrón Port factory the container used is a long, handle-less amphora, this type being found only at this archaeological site due to its nearby production.

Bottling was generally in amphora. To keep the contents airtight they were sealed with lime mortar lids, on which there were occasionally a seal with the product manufacturer’s brand. There are also marks on the amphora themselves which could be related to the potteries which made them, and which were often in the hands of the same owners.

The containers usually had the same characteristics determined in each factory, serving as means of identification for the products and their place of origin, like certificates of origin.
