Our Father Jesus the Nazarene bids farewell every year to a week of religious fervour and grand tradition in Vera. The Royal Arch Brotherhood is the oldest of the Easter Week congregations and has among its images that popularly known as “the child”, the final triumph of Christ before death.

The exact date the Royal Arch Brotherhood our Our Father Jesus the Nazarene was founded is unknown, but the first written date is 1674. Its presence in the social life of this period was already consolidated, as is shown in historical data, such as in 1680 brother Juan de Haro Gallardo had already written in his will that he was an active member of the Brotherhood.

On Easter Friday three of the four congregation’s images are paraded. Among these is the image of the Lord with the cross at his shoulder at the time of the Stations of the Cross. Our Father Jesus the Nazarene is a work by the Valencian sculptor José María Ponsoda from 1940. A total of 64 men carry it on a Baroque-style throne in golden pine wood with golf leaf. The work dates from 1995.

The station of penitence is also made by the group of sculptures formed by the images of Our Lord and Saint Peter at the moment of the foot washing at the Last Supper. This is a work by Arturo Bayarri, made in 1941. It is carried by a total of 60 women on a Rococo-style throne made from cedar wood, on which is incorporated natural silk embroidery and gold and silverwork details.

A total of 40 bearers are responsible for carrying a group of sculptures formed by the image of the Holy Mary of Piety kneeling below the cross with the inert body of her son in her lap, a work by Cordoban religious image maker Enrique Ruiz in 1999. It is carried on a Barroque cedar wood float made in the same year.

Finally, the Brotherhood leaves the last triumph of Christ over death to popular devotion. The final image of pilgrimage is on the Sunday of the Resurrection. Known popularly as “The Child”, the image which represents the resurrection has more sentimental than artistic value. Every year many people voluntarily take it in turns to carry the float round the different streets of the route.
